Tour Description:
Mentougou District is situated at the west of Beijing with an area of about 1,330 square kilometers. It is composed of eighteen towns and five neighboring committees with a population of over 270, 000. The 98% of the district is a mountainous area with over 100 peaks. It is rich in coal, limestone and granite reserves. Usually, temples are nestled in the mountains, and Mentougou is no exception. There are two famous temples in this district: Tanzhe Temple and Jietai Temple. Here you can also find many well-preserved old villages like Chuan Di Xia Village. First, we drive to Tanzhe Temple which is a typical Buddhist temple, lying in the Tanzhe Hills on the western outskirts of Beijing. As the first temple built in the Beijing area, it was built during the Jin Dynasty (AD265-420). Therefore, there is a saying shows that "First there was the Tanzhe Temple, then there was Beijing". Then, we head for the famous Jietai Temple, also called temple of the ordination altar due to the famous Ming marble ordination altar. Situated at the west of Beijing, it was firstly constructed about 1,300 years ago. This altar is about 5 meters (16 feet) high and decorated with delicate and elegant carvings.
